Farne Islands (National Nature Reserve)
A visit to the Farne Islands should be at the top of the “to do” lists for bird-watchers, historians, geologists……..in fact everyone.
Landing is allowed on 3 of the 28 (14 at high tide!) islands.
LONGSTONE ISLAND has no breeding birds but does have a historic lighthouse.
STAPLE ISLAND has breeding Razorbill, Guillemot, Puffin, Fulmar, Kittiwake and Rock Pipt. Landings are in the morning from May – July.
INNER FARNE has breeding all of these plus Common, Sandwich and Arctic Tern. Landings in the afternoon from April – July.
Boats sail from Seahouses and you should always remember to wear a hat, particularly in June & July when the Terns are at their most vigorous protecting their eggs and chicks!
